Chimney Pot
During the Victorian period, stacks were on top of the buildings and grand homes. They were beautiful, sometimes
being very ornate. It seems like when the industrial revolution came around; the stacks became a thing of the past.
It its place came the chimney pot. The Victorians were very proud, hard working and valued things they considered
would improve their property. The different design of the chimney pot was largely due to the cure for the down
draught.
Anyone that has a fireplace will probably have a chimney pot. A lot of people think they started in England, but
in reality they were from all over the world. Records go back as far as the thirteenth century for chimney pots,
but America and most of Europe were to discover them in the eighteen hundreds.
The draft up the chimney is increased with a chimney pot, or maybe the fireplace would have more than one.
People had to have them when the fireplace was the only source of heat. They had to have something that would pull
the toxic fumes out of the house, as coal was mostly used then.
Sometime in the nineteen twenties the chimney pot was no longer used, and were not put on with the new houses
being built. Oil burners were taking over America as the leading source of heat. Since the chimney pot was no
longer being used in existing houses, the mortar around the chimney began to crack and crumble. Many just took it
down, not wanting to preserve the old chimney pot.
The chimney pot is making a come back today. They are not so expensive that people cannot put them on top of the
roofs anymore. They can come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and extremely easy to install. They tend to add
beauty and charm to homes and sometimes professional buildings. If having an older home, by putting up a chimney
pot can certainly add to the value of the home. Or even a new home can look elegant with a chimney pot.
Extremely easy to install a chimney pot will add to the home, not take away from it. There are many companies
today that build or restore old chimney pots. The price range of course depends on how big or fancy you want it.
They usually start around three hundred dollars and go up to thousands of dollars.
If not wanting to erect a chimney pot on the house, there are many people now that are finding and using old
ones for gardens and planters. If found a bishop chimney pot is worth the money as it certainly adds charm to any
yard, if nothing else than sitting it in the yard. Not so elegant is the cannon chimney pot, and yes, it looks just
like a cannon. They are not very pretty but do make a nice planter for draping plants such as ivy.
So whether a chimney pot goes on top of the house, or used for planting flowers, they will add charm to any
house or yard.
